Research group predicts mobile VOIP will be dominant in 5 years

It’s time for me to coin the phrase legacy wireless when referring to the members of the American Cellular Cartel. Remember you saw both of these phrases here first at Third Pipe.
Mobile VOIP is beginning to become pervasive in every segment of wireless communications including locked handsets from the cartel. This, combined with open networks (someone will build Wimax, with 700MHz following in a few years) will make the locked handset on a closed network completely undesirable to even the technically challenged. No one will want to lock themselves into a network for 2 years with a crippled device that only works the way the provider wants it to.

A recent study from the research group Disruptive Analysis indicates that not only is mobile VoIP here to stay, but by the year 2012, a mere 5 years away, it will take over WiFi to reign supreme. Their numbers are impressive, with a predictoin of 250m users by then, a surge largely brought about by wireless carriers and independents. (from VoIP News)
