AT&T CEO admits an open wireless network is “inevitable”
Randall Stevenson has downplayed the importance of the Verizon “open wireless network announcement” implying it’s not a matter of if, but when for his company.
We are probably one of the most open networks in the world,” Stephenson said in an interview with Forbes’ Quentin Hardy at a Churchill Club dinner in Santa Clara, Calif.
Well, not really. Consumers who buy AT&T Inc. are wedded to the AT&T network and cannot use an iPhone or any other phone they buy in an AT&T store in the United States on another network. (from Marketwatch)
Even with the declared “open networks” without the dreaded details in the terms of service no one can really be sure how open that the cartel’s “open networks” will be, or when they will be. When really depends on competition. The only way to insure total openness is with a big open wireless pipe that competes with the status quo. If Sprint is unable to get their Wimax network up and running next year, well likely be waiting until 2010/2011 when something will be working on the 700MHz band.

Damn! Here’s the money quote — “Stephenson said that he thinks that the current subsidy model will change. “They’re all going to be open over time,” he commented.”
Pretty much telegraphs where were headed. I would not spend another dime on a CDMA phone.
