Tim O’Reilly talks up web 2.0 publishing
It’s no secret that the web has been displacing giant chunks of print and broadcast media. In a world where anyone can publish and publications are interactive the old media’s system of telling us what to think just doesn’t work any more. Web based media is dynamic, multi-media, interactive and most importantly decentralized.
In this presentation from the 2007 O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing Conference, O’Reilly examines some of the basic trends behind these Web 2.0 web sites and examines how they are evolving the role of publishers within the industry. Drawing upon the experiences of his own company, O’Reilly shares various projects that O’Reilly Media uses to give customers a variety of options, or as Tim calls it “letting the Wookie win”. Pulp’s biggest problem is that it is too old when it hits the streets. I can read the wire news from www.drudgereport.com this minute or wait for it to show up tomorrow. Pretty soon if you are doing that the mindset becomes — why bother with the pulp?
By the way, readership of the news weeklies are down further than the dailies in readership.
