It’s Baaaack! The Everex-WalMart $199 PC that is.

gOSThis is an update. Article here.

If you go and read the specs you won’t be impressed. But that is not the point. It’s a Ma Frickert machine. But for the geeky of us that might turn their nose up at this, let me wet your appetite –

I am sure you can come up with other ideas. When I can get my hands on a WiMax card and service its going in the box too.

Got mine delivered tonight (today?), from Walmart - online. Blew away the GOS and installed Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop. Funny thing, when I trued to run the GOS it didn’t recognize my Dell 19 ” flat monitor and I thought - ought oh! But I put in the ubuntu and at first it didn’t recognize it either, but then I put it in again and (get this) moved the mouse around on the screen, and, dunno, maybe it helped it realize what I had - but it recognized the flat monitor fine.

For $200? You can’t beat it.

As reported here earlier by our Dr Dog on its sell out release and its return, the single most enabling component in making WalMart’s highly successful $199 PC cost only $199 is a free linux based operating system that is hot wired to access web based apps. Combined with what is increasingly available low cost broadband, it’s an MS killer. Opinion — Sometimes, several unrelated changes come to a head at the same time, with a result no one could have predicted. The PC market is at such a tipping point right now and the result will be millions of Linux-powered PCs in users’ hands. [...]
