Low fat dairy might seem like the ideal choice to retain in your diet, but it’s far from being the healthy option. A Harvard scientist, David Ludwig, is urging individuals to be aware of the dangers of low fat milk. He claims it is better to go back to the full-bodied variety, and here are the reasons why.

Obesity

There’s word going around that full-fat milk can make you gain weight – which is why a lot of people are going for ‘skim-slim’ milk. Studies show, however, that this is not true. There’s actually a benefit in using full-fat milk in that those who consume full-fat often have an easier time maintaining their weight.

Heart Problems

Full-fat milk also contains a healthy dose of phytanic acid, which helps maintain insulin levels and blood pressure. There’s also conjugated linolic acid in the milk known for reducing the risks of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Consume this on a daily basis and you’ll be able to lower the risks of these 4 common health issues all at once.

Special Vitamins

Some vitamins and minerals are hard to come by in a person’s typical diet. These include retinol and vitamin K2 which are known as fat-soluble vitamins. They’re available through full-fat milk though, and should make your diet more comprehensive.

Dental Health

When it comes to healthier teeth and gums, milk is often a cited ‘must’ in your diet. Unfortunately, teeth health is only benefited through full-fat milk.

Drinking the skim variety won’t really give you any type of benefit. At least nowhere near what full-fat can provide. If you’re partial to low-fat chocolate milk, that actually makes things worse. The blended variety already contains loads of sugar which would only promote tooth decay.

What About Calcium?

There’s no question that both skim milk and full-fat milk contain calcium for better bone health. Hence, if you’re drinking milk primarily for this purpose, then the need to ‘switch’ may not be as prevalent. Bear in mind, however, that calcium is a relatively common mineral in various types of food.

Green and leafy vegetables are packed with calcium in amounts definitely higher than milk. The unique properties of full-fat however, are better than skim milk and should be taken into account, and if you’re going to drink one, it makes sense to choose the type that offers more with each gulp.

Saturated Fats

It’s a common mistake to think that ‘full fat’ as written in milk is the same as the ‘fat’ that’s attached to the body. They’re two completely different things and saturated fats which can be found in full-fat milk are actually desirable.

Replacing saturated fats with ‘alternatives’ can lead to various problems such as increased instances of obesity, lower amounts of good cholesterol, increased bad cholesterol, and increased chances of coronary heart disease.

So when scientists talk about the benefits of milk, they’re actually talking about the full-fat variety. Simply put, the dangers of low fat dairy involve doing yourself out of numerous vitamins and minerals. Bear in mind though that ‘low fat’ isn’t limited to milk as there are also cheese products advertised under the same label.

Starting your day with lukewarm lemon water is one of the best things you can do for your body. Lemons are loaded with vitamin C, B, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, enzymes, antioxidants, and fibers. Next to adding a host of healthy nutrients, it also kick-starts digestion, boosts the immune system, fights inflammation, and hydrates and energizes the body.

For more info, read: 15 Reasons You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water Every Morning

To make this healthy morning habit even better, I recently started to add turmeric too. In addition to getting the amazing benefits of lukewarm lemon water, turmeric will turn it into a nutrient-dense, cleansing energy bomb to fly through your day.

What turmeric-lemon water can do for you:

  • Boost anti-inflammatory properties of lemon water. Curcumin, or turmeric’s active compound, is a potent anti-inflammatory compound which matches the effectiveness of many over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Improve brain power. Lemons are an excellent source of brain-boosting potassium and magnesium, while turmeric has been found to reduce the risk of cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
  • Antioxidant activity. Both lemon and turmeric possess strong antioxidant activity to keep your skin in perfect condition and keep tumors at bay.
  • Improve digestion. Eating or drinking turmeric on a daily basis stimulates the gallbladder, reduces bloating and gas, and prevents inflammation of the digestive tract, while lemon juice helps to loosen and flush out toxins from the digestive system.
  • Heart-friendly. Curcumin reduces LDL (or bad) cholesterol, prevents blood clotting, and removes plaque build-ups in the arteries.
  • Weight-loss aid. Lemons stoke the metabolic fire, which helps you to burn more calories from the food you eat.
  • Cleansing properties. Lemons and turmeric stimulate your liver to produce more enzymes. It enables the liver to work more efficiently in eliminating toxins and waste materials.

Turmeric-lemon water recipe

  • 1 glass lukewarm water (nut milk works too)
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Juice of ½ lemon (or 1 lime)
  • Pinch of black pepper (to increases turmeric’s bioavailability)
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste (optional)
  • A pinch of cinnamon (optional: for extra anti-diabetic effect)

Add lemon juice, black pepper, turmeric, honey, and cinnamon to a glass of lukewarm water. Drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for the best energizing effect. Stir constantly while drinking to avoid all turmeric to sink to the bottom of the glass.

]]>
Statistics show that about a quarter of Americans from age 45 and above are taking statin drugs. This is also the estimated number of Americans who should start asking themselves whether it is still worth it to continue taking the drugs or not.

Muscle Pain and Heart Failure

Muscle pain, along with feeling weak, is the most common side effect associated with statins. In fact, reports state that about 75% of patients using statins suffer from muscle pain. Particularly those who are physically active. Experts assume that this may be due to the decreased energy production in muscles caused by the deteriorating levels of Q10 proteins.

Heart failure also has a direct link to muscle pain. The incidence of heart failure has increased in the past few years. The increase has been related to the affected production of Co-Q10 caused by statin drugs.

The lack of Co-Q10 inhibits the cell’s mitochondria to produce energy, which in turn leads to muscle pain and weakness. Hence, these also make the heart more susceptible to illnesses due to the level of energy it uses to function.

Neuropathy

Statin patients are at risk of nerve damage after taking the drugs for a long time. In most cases, the damage is often irreversible even after the patient stopped taking the drugs.

Polyneuropathy is another neurological problem that patients often complain about. People who develop polyneuropathy experience tingling as well as pain in the hands and feet, weakness, and difficulty walking.

The worst part is that the likelihood of the illness getting worse increases to 9% after a year of using the drug and up to 15% following a two-year intake.

Cancer

A significant number of studies with statins and rodents always resulted in cancer. The problem is, such possibility was not linked to humans because statin trials only go on for up to three years. Even with the fact that cancer takes some time to develop.

However, manufacturers do recognize that statin drugs weaken the immune system, which unfortunately may result in infectious disease and cancer. Still, they recommend its use for transplant patients to act as an immune suppressor, and for inflammatory arthritis.

Type II Diabetes

Statins were made and introduced as an attempt to help protect and improve heart health. However, case studies show that the only thing these drugs do is worsen the patient’s condition.

One good example of that is obesity, which users tend to develop after they begin a statin treatment due to the drugs’ gluttony effect.

Second to that, statin users become highly at risk of developing Type II diabetes. Studies showed that statin users become prone to developing long-term complications related to Type II diabetes. Some of which are eye disease, peripheral nerve disease, and kidney disease.

All these dangers of statins only prove that these drugs may help patients at some point, but it does not take long before something goes wrong.

Science has long explained that cholesterol is not the reason behind the development of heart disease. In fact, cholesterol is essential to human health while lack of exercise, poor eating habits, and obesity are more likely the direct causes of such illness.

To conclude, intake of cholesterol-lowering drugs will not help if you do not support it with lifestyle and dietary changes. If you want to regulate your cholesterol and keep your heart in the best condition, you only need to include a few simple things in your lifestyle.

Perform brisk walking or aerobic exercise at least 30 minutes a day five times a week. Add lecithin-rich foods and herbs in your diet, and eat plenty of heart-healthy foods, like omega-3 fats.

Remember, you can always consult with a healthcare practitioner to improve your heart health naturally if you want to avoid the dangers of statins.

Anxiety can be good or bad depending on how you deal with it. You can even benefit from it if you improve mental clarity.

Recall a recent panic attack. What were you thinking at that time? Pay attention to the way you reacted and the sensations you felt. Is what happened a real catastrophe, or is it just about being frightened?

Did you feel any of the following?

  • Racing heart
  • Breathlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

These sensations can be scary in themselves and make you think that your health or sanity is threatened, but were you really in danger?

Evaluate the Threat

It’s likely that you felt uncomfortable sensations because you were anxious and not because your health was in peril. It’s also possible that you have been worrying about something that was harmless or non-existent all along.

Whenever you experience these again, tell yourself that these are normal and will soon pass.

Learn more about the things that trigger your panic. What were the thoughts, sensations, or circumstances involved? Why did they make you feel that way? Take another look at it and ask if your panic was justified. Try to react differently the next time you encounter them.

It helps to catch the panic early before your fears have escalated. Keep your reactions under your control so they do not escalate the problem. To give yourself peace of mind, keep a phone with emergency numbers in it so you can call for help when you really need to.

Calm Yourself Down

Control your breathing – your breath affects what you feel, so if you breathe slower, you will feel calmer. Do this with the intention of becoming more serene. You can also imagine or recall peaceful scenes.

Distract Yourself

Turn your attention to something else instead of focusing on the things you fear or what is happening to you. Be busy, talk with others, move about, or think of another thing. The conscious mind has a limited capacity. If you occupy it with your chosen target, it will be unable to churn up worrying ideas.

Take Action

If there really is a problem and it’s not just you worrying too much, ask yourself first: is there anything you can do about it? Work out what you could do. Perform the action immediately if you can. If you can’t do something right now, plan what to do and when to do it.

If you can’t do something about it right now or ever, stop worrying about it and distract yourself. Worry is an emotion that is designed for action. It’s useful even if it’s uncomfortable because it motivates you to solve a problem or evade a threat. But, if it just makes you ill, drop it.

Reduce Stress

Reduce your stress and overall level of anxiety. Perform relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, and mild exercises. Avoid stressors that you don’t need to deal with. Learn to say no to toxic people and situations. The longer you are stressed, the more prone you are to developing anxiety, so minimize your stress levels when you can.

Always remember that your emotions are a result of what you think about. Strive to improve mental clarity during anxiety. Be more aware of your thoughts and how they make you react. Change them when you can so that they are more realistic and helpful. When your anxiety is justified, turn it into a motivating force instead of a debilitating burden.

Mosquitoes are insects the world can do without. At least, that’s what many wish, myself included. However, these annoying disease-carrying pests play a part in the complex food web.

That said, one could do better by just using natural mosquito repellent plants rather than toxic chemical insecticides. Enjoy the outdoors (and even indoors) without the hassles of mosquitoes hovering around waiting for their chance to help themselves to your blood.

Have some of the plants in this list in your yard and in your home to keep those pesky mosquitoes away.

1.    Basil

A favorite herb for cooking, especially in Italian cuisine, basil is also perfect for warding off mosquitoes. Keep a pot of basil plant in your kitchen so you can cook in peace and have fresh basil leaves at your disposal.

2.    Bee balm

The bee balm is an ornamental plant that repels mosquitoes but attracts bees and even hummingbirds.

3.    Catnip

Catnip is ten times better than DEET in getting rid of mosquitoes. The only problem with catnip is that cats are attracted to it. So, place them in an area far from your precious garden plants so you won’t have your feline friends trampling all over them.

4.    Citronella Grass

Perhaps the most popular of all natural mosquito repellent plants, citronella grass produces an odor that mosquitoes hate. This is why citronella is the main ingredient of many anti-mosquito products.

5.    Garlic

Garlic has many uses aside from providing its distinct taste to many dishes. It has numerous medicinal uses and apparently keeps bloodthirsty vampires away, as well. The latter may just be a myth, but studies have shown that it does keep mosquitoes at bay.

6.    Geranium

This ornamental plant looks great when placed in a container and hung by the window. It is perfect indoors where it provides a beautiful sight while keeping the skeeters away.

7.    Lavender

Lavender is a popular garden plant not only for its aesthetic value, pleasant scent, and calming effects. It can also keep mosquitoes and other critters away.

8.    Lemon Balm

Like the rest of the mint family, lemon balm is effective against these skeeters. It is also useful in treating digestive problems, cramps, and PMS.

9.    Lemongrass

Lemongrass is similar to the citronella grass in looks. It also contains the ingredient citronella, making it an excellent way to keep the bloodsuckers at bay.

10. Lemon Thyme

Gather some lemon thyme leaves and crush them up before leaving them in places where mosquitoes like to gather. A study done by the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada discovered that mosquito bites are lessened by 62%, thanks to lemon thyme.

11. Marigolds

Pyrethrum, the substance that gives marigold its one-of-a-kind scent, is nature’s insecticide. Marigolds in your garden will make it not only pretty and but also bug-free.

12. Mint

Peppermint and other members of the mint family are not only known for their distinct taste and scent but also for their effectiveness against bugs, especially mosquitoes.

13. Pennyroyal

Pennyroyals make for a great ground cover in your garden. The purple flowers are beautiful to look at and attract butterflies. The plant also repels mosquitoes.

14. Rosemary

Like basil, rosemary is a favorite herb among cooking enthusiasts. Aside from keeping those pesky mosquitoes away, it’s also great for your memory.

15. Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is a popular essential oil used in many ways, including repelling mosquitoes. You can grow your own plant and use the leaves to make your own bug oil or spray.

Allow me to scare you a little by saying that the World Health Organization expects a 70% rise in cancer cases worldwide in the next two decades. That is a seriously alarming number.

Cancer is real and something that you should avoid taking lightly. The good news is, with the right cancer prevention strategies, you can prevent this disease. You can do so by starting your healthy regimen today.

Here are three simple yet very powerful strategies that are sure to keep cancer at bay.

1.    Eat healthily, eat organic

There have been many studies revealing that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is important to prevent cancer. It does not only strengthen the immune system but according to CancerResearchUK.org, it also helps prevent DNA damage caused by the formation of cancer-causing chemicals.

The problem is that not all fruits and vegetables these days are safe to eat. The pesticides used in commercially grown foods increase the body’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

Even when properly washed, it is not an assurance that all the toxic chemicals will be removed. Because food production is a complex issue, the rule of thumb when it comes to food choices is to ‘better be safe than sorry’.

The best strategy is to buy organically grown fruits and vegetables. These are grown without harmful pesticides, fertilizers, and genetic modifications. They may be a bit pricey, but remember that you are buying for your family’s food safety.

2.    Sweat it out

Regular exercise significantly lowers your risk of developing a number of diseases, and one of them is cancer. According to Cancer.org, various studies are continuously being undertaken because of convincing evidence that medium-intensity exercise reduces one’s risk of developing cancer.

Exercise helps the cells properly carry out toxins, wastes, heavy metals, viruses and dead cells out of the system.

For proper excretion of body wastes, it is important to move. Health experts recommend a medium-intensity workout of 30 minutes a day, five times a week. You will know you are doing it right when you start to sweat and feel more energized after a workout rather than tired.

3.    Detoxification

Our bodies are exposed to cancer-causing pollution and harmful chemicals every day. From the food we eat to the air we breathe. Exposure is inevitable, but through regular detoxification you can help significantly reduce the accumulation of these toxins in the cells.

Experts suggest that the best detox strategy for cancer prevention starts by cleansing the colon. The liver, kidneys and gall bladder then follow. There are various types of cancer prevention strategies through detoxification for you to choose from, including whole food detox, juicing, water detox or complete fasting.

Cancer is preventable, and the majority of those diagnosed are treatable once caught during the early stages. Armed with the right information and prevention strategies, you and your family can enjoy a full and beautiful cancer-free life!

]]>
Turmeric has been used for different purposes for thousands of years. Apart from being served as a primary ingredient in mustards and curries, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinal traditions use turmeric to treat certain illnesses and health conditions, and Indians make use of it during religious ceremonies.

Turmeric is capable of helping people who suffer from chronic joint pain and inflammation, with the latter highly associated with a number of health conditions.

However, behind these benefits are also some side effects that people should know. Below are the top cases of when to avoid turmeric.

1.     Blood Pressure and Diabetes Medication

Using a high amount of turmeric in any form may lead to low blood pressure or blood sugar. Hence, people taking medication for diabetes or those meant to regulate blood pressure should apply caution when using turmeric as a supplement. This may heighten its effects, leading to symptoms like a racing heartbeat, blurred vision, and confusion. Therefore, it is not advisable to take turmeric along with medications for diabetes.

2.     When You Have A Blood-Clotting Disorder

The spice is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, it can also have an adverse effect if combined with anti-clotting medications, which may result in bruising and bleeding.

You can expect such effects if you take a large dose of the spice with any of the following blood-thinning medications: aspirin, antiplatelet drugs, and warfarin.

The same happens if you take the spice with herbal remedies known for their blood-thinning effects, like red clover, ginger, garlic, and willow.

It is also important to stop taking turmeric supplements two weeks before a surgical procedure to avoid its blood-thinning effects.

3.     If You Are Pregnant or Breastfeeding

Experts advise pregnant women to avoid taking high doses of turmeric to prevent any side effects. This may include stimulating the uterus, which may put the pregnancy at risk.

4.     If You Suffer From Excessive Stomach Acid

Experts say that there is no risk of side effects if the spice is used in the recommended dosage. The problem arises if it is taken in high doses because it may increase the acid levels in the stomach, which can damage the esophagus’ lining if it starts rising.

If this occurs, it will also cause hyperacidity, heartburn, and intestinal or stomach ulcers, or even worsen the case. Other related symptoms may include bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, and chest pain.

5.     If You Have Gallbladder Problems

Turmeric can do two things for your gallbladder. The spice can aid in regulating the amount of bile the gallbladder produces, or it can obstruct the bile duct and cause the formation of gallstones. However, the latter effect is only going to happen if your gallbladder is not in a good condition.

6.     If You Suffer From Liver Problems

Some studies showed that intake of turmeric has an effect on how the organ processes some drugs, and may lead to liver problems. In relation to that, experts now stress for people with a liver condition to practice caution when taking turmeric supplements.

Making use of turmeric’s medicinal properties is safe as long as it is consumed in the recommended dosage. The cases mentioned above are just some of the examples you may become at risk of if you do not follow the basic guidelines.

Keep in mind that the standard and safe dosage for turmeric is 400-600mg of the powder, taken 1 to 3 times daily.

If you have a pre-existing condition, the only way to know the safe dosage and find out more about when to avoid turmeric is through consulting your doctor first.

The connection between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease has long been suspected, though concrete proof has yet to be discovered. During the 60s and 70s, the belief that aluminum was causing Alzheimer’s was at a high. Since then, some researchers have debunked the idea.

However, many still think that the two are connected. Does aluminum cause Alzheimer? Before we back or dismiss this notion, we need to know what we’re dealing with.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

This dreaded disease is a common form of dementia in which the patient suffers from memory loss and difficulty in processing and thinking. The brains of the patients have shrunk and have been discovered to contain senile plaques or decaying nerve terminals. Found within these plaques is the element aluminum.

What is aluminum?

When we say aluminum, we think of that thin sheet of silver foil used for wrapping food. It is more than that. Aluminum is a neurotoxin. In other words, it poisons the nerve tissues.

It is found everywhere. In fact, it is the third most common element in the world. It is in our drinking water, in the food we eat, in the ground we walk on, in the air we breathe, and even in our body. Suffice to say, it is quite difficult to avoid exposure to this metal.

Now, the question “Does aluminum cause Alzheimer?” is still begging for an answer

Back in 2014, Christopher Exley, a professor from Keele University in the United Kingdom stressed in his case study that aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease are indeed connected.

He saw high amounts of aluminum in the brain of a deceased person with Alzheimer’s. That person was regularly exposed to aluminum for eight years while working for a company that made a particular material used by the space and nuclear industries.

The man developed numerous medical problems including headaches, poor memory, exhaustion, mouth ulcers, and depression early in his stint with the company. He then suffered from Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2011.

Brain samples retrieved from the deceased showed high levels of aluminum that suggested it had something to do with the fast deterioration of the person, and the early onset and rapid progression of the disease.

Whether this study is enough proof or otherwise, we should all steer clear of aluminum. Not only is it a prime suspect in Alzheimer’s, but it is also linked to autism, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological disorders.

The best way to prevent such medical issues is to avoid aluminum altogether. Or at least the ones we can control.

How to prevent aluminum exposure?

1.     Avoid using aluminum pots and pans

Get rid of everything aluminum in your kitchen starting with your cookware. Replace your aluminum cook- and bakeware with nontoxic ones such as stainless steel, glass, ceramic and green non-stick cookware. Ceramic cookware is the best of the lot simply because they don’t leach anything into your food.

2.     Stop using aluminum foil

For baking or packing leftover food, avoid aluminum foil. Try BPA free containers or casserole dishes with glass lids. Banana leaves will eliminate the need to use aluminum foil to wrap certain foods for baking.

3.     Stop drinking from aluminum cans

Beverages in aluminum cans include sodas, beers, and other unhealthy options. For that reason alone, you should stop drinking them.

4.     Avoid using cosmetics, sunscreens, and deodorants with aluminum

There are natural alternatives to these products while some products are made of natural ingredients. Check the labels for the presence of aluminum and other chemicals.

5.     Don’t take medicines containing aluminum

Aspirin, antacids, and other drugs often have aluminum. Look for other ways to treat medical issues without depending on such meds.

Alzheimer’s disease is no laughing matter. Ask anyone who suffers or knows someone who suffers from the disease and you’ll get an idea how hard it is. To avoid such situation, take care of yourself and your loved ones by avoiding aluminum as much as possible.

If you are trying to lose weight or live a healthy lifestyle, one of your health-conscious friends may have suggested that you try eating brown rice.

Usually, your friend will tell you that he has been eating this staple for quite a long time. He might even spend time in explaining the benefits that you will get from eating this wonder rice.

Well, it is true that brown rice can help you lose weight because it contains manganese, fiber, and selenium that fend off antioxidants and improve digestive health.

But just like any food, too much of it can be bad for you. If a friend tells you to eat brown rice, take his advice with a grain of salt. Do your research first and check if this staple is right for your diet.

To help you get started, check out the possible health risks of brown rice below.

  1. It contains arsenic.

Brown rice, when manufactured, contains trace amounts of arsenic. Being exposed to this element for numerous times will lead to adverse side effects. This includes cancer of the kidney and lungs, as well as hyperkeratosis and skin lesions.

Most brown rice brands contain arsenic that is 50 percent more than the recommended safe serving. That is why you should be careful with the brown rice that you buy.

  1. There is the danger of cross-contamination.

Before you add a pack of brown rice to your shopping cart, do not forget to read its label first to avoid experiencing any food allergies.

A lot of manufacturers create different kinds of products using this grain. This includes flour, bread, or snacks. To save up on production costs, brands tend to use the same equipment for making every product, which can, therefore, lead to cross-contamination. This will increase the chances of rice becoming contaminated with dangerous allergens.

  1. It contains phytic acid.

Aside from dangerous arsenic, other health risks of brown rice include the grain’s phytic acid content. This is an insoluble compound that prevents vital nutrients from being absorbed by the body. It also prevents the minerals from working properly.

  1. It is bad for pregnant women.

Since brown rice contains arsenic, this means that pregnant women should stay away from it. This is to avoid any mishaps and keep the baby safe.

  1. It can be bad for the heart.

Several studies have noted that brown rice should not be consumed by people with heart disease because of its arsenic content.

  1. It makes it difficult for you to digest food.

Eating too much brown rice can damage your digestive system. That is because the phytic acid in the grains prevents essential vitamins and minerals from being absorbed by the gut.

Are there any alternatives to brown rice?

People need to consume at least 30 grams of dietary fiber every day to have a good digestive system and keep your blood sugar regulated.

If you are planning to remove brown rice from your diet, you can try other types of food such as oats, bulgur, quinoa, buckwheat, or barley. These foods are rich in fiber and are easy to cook.

Avoid the health risks of eating brown rice by doing your research and eating better and healthier alternatives!

Consuming fruits and vegetables during the three main meals is an important aspect of healthy eating. However, recent studies show that there may be some challenges to the fruit consumption aspect of this practice.

Such challenges stress that fruit consumption is unhealthy to some degree due to high glucose and fructose content. On the flip side, eating fruit is important to fight nutrition deficiency.

With these two different views to contemplate on, it is easy to find yourself asking, ‘Is fruit good or bad for you?’

The Bad — Sugar Content

There is some truth to the view that consumption of fruit is unhealthy. And the culprit behind that is the amount of sugar that fruits contain. It is widely known that sugar or too much of it is not healthy because it leads to lots of health issues. A high amount of sugar in the diet causes inflammation, which leads to obesity and other modern lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

In connection, fruits contain sugar in the form of fructose, which also plays a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Hence, the more fruits you eat, the more amount of sugar the body receives, which may cause visceral body fat to develop.

The Good — Fiber Content and Other Nutrients

However, there is another side to this issue, which is what Dr. David Ludwig, New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center’s director, emphasized. He stated that eating fruits, no matter how much you consume, is not associated with any adverse health effects.

Yes, there may be effects, but most of them are positive for the health, like the metabolic benefits that fruits’ healthful nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber content deliver.

The fiber content found in fruits also plays a vital role in reducing the risk for Type 2 diabetes, especially if the cell walls containing it remain intact. Keep in mind that sugars in fruits are contained in their cells, which the digestive tract finds hard to break down.

Due to that, they will need to enter the bloodstream, allowing the liver to have more time metabolizing them. The fact that the sugars are absorbed slowly prevents and minimizes a surge in one’s blood sugar, and in effect, reduces the risk for Type 2 diabetes.

That is just one of the advantages of eating fruits.

According to Dr. Robert Lustig, there is a third benefit to consuming these treats. Aside from promoting satiety and slowing down the release of sugar, the fiber in fruits helps healthy bacteria to thrive in the stomach by changing the body’s intestinal flora.

Fruit Juices Over Whole Fruits

Another way to answer the question ‘Is fruit good or bad for you?’ is through the consumption of fruit juices and whole fruits. Among these options, experts certainly encourage consumption of whole fruits while practicing caution in using fruit juices.

Experts highlight the fact that some vital changes occur while turning these fruits into liquid. As these changes happen, the metabolic benefit of the fruit’s fiber content also decreases.

Overall, the key determinant of whether eating fruits is good or not lies in their fiber content. Consuming whole fruits may be much better than taking their juice forms. However, you are still free to drink fruit juices if you prefer to do so as long as their vitamins, minerals, and fiber content are retained. One way of ensuring that is by tossing the entire fruit in a blender instead of squeezing them when juicing.

Eating fruits in moderation is also important here. By moderation, it means limiting your consumption to two servings a day. You can go and consume up to three servings, but ensure that there is a three-hour gap between each serving.

To make it easier, just ensure that veggies occupy the biggest portion of your plate during meals, and not fruits. Consuming a variety of fruits also helps since it maximizes their benefits, allowing the body to get different types of nutrients and antioxidants.
