Any wireless protocol that distinguished from a typical 3G CDMA like network
Uverse
A triple play offering by AT&T. This service provides Video, VoIP, and email in a bundled package. The service can be provided by either copper or fiber plant as defiend by local conditions.
700mhz
Refers to the abandoned TV block of frequencies now up for auction by the FCC.
802.xx
A class of wireless transport protocols defined by the IEEE. 802.11 = WiFi. 802.16e = WiMax. 802.20 = WiMax extended
American Cellular Cartel
AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Combined they represent 99% of the cellular market.
Android
A handset OS being offered by the Open Handset Alliance.
BICTIA
Buy It Cheap, Throw It Away. The concept that computer hardware becomes so cheap that the need to service it is not given a second thought. Generally this is applied to desktops < $200 and Laptops <$300. A corollary to this is that an end users documents are generally in the 'Cloud' so that loss of the hardware is not a problem and can be reproduced when a replacement is acquired.
Bills
Any proposals being considered by Congress that may become law.
BPL
Broadband over Power Line. A data service that provides broadband over electrial power grid wiring.
Courts
For our purposes any State or Federal court in the North American sphere. Additionally any court adjudication overseas by a country or legal entity. (e.g. EU).
DNS
Domain Name Service. A protocol and service that translates a logical name like ThirdPipe.com to a defined know IP address.
DOCSIS
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications. A layer 2/3 specification for binding a cable modem to the providers network address map. Currently at version 2 of the spec.
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line. A series of technologies that provide digital transport service over what is copper phone pairs. ISDN is an example of DSL.
Duopoly
The combined holdings wired and wireless of AT&T and Verizon. Combined these companies represent almost 90% of the wired market (POTS and Broadband) and about 75% of the wireless market. Between the two they almost represent the assets of what used to be the old Bell System of 80’s. Their heydey before divestiture.
Eggo
Refers to an irresistible user pull for a particular service. See this link.
FCC
Federal Communications Commission. The federal agency created by the Communciations Act of 1934 to oversee the allocation of radio frequencies. Later expanded to oversee all telecommunications in the USA.
FIOS
A content provisioning service provide by Verizon Communications over fiber optic cable.
FTTH
Fiber To The Home. Also know as FTTP. Any level of service that utilizes fiber optic cable directly to the household.
IP
Two meanings. 1) Internet Protocol. The layer 2-4 components that make internet transport possible. 2) Intellectual Property. The right of an inventor to protect their use of the product from others without due compensation. Such rights usually have a limited time frame.
Legacy Wireless
Any of the current providers of cellular service — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon. It also refers to the services they provide <3G.
Legislation
See Bills. For purposes here, any Bill that has made it out of committee in either House of the Congress.
Long Tail
The attribute of internet content that lacks high hit status but is continually referenced or utilized. An example would be ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ by Jules Verne. Long ago a block buster but constally read around the world.
Munis
Municipality. Refers to a city of other local territorial entity.
Netcast
Any content provided over an IP/ethernet connection.
OT
Off Topic. Generally any nontelcom related observation that might be significant.
Overseas
Any location other than the US/Mexico/Canada.
Persons of Interest
Individuals that participated in the telecom industry or had influence over same.
Place
A georeference of where a wireless device is located. The concept is that of where the device is at any instant in relation to other assets in the georeference. The concept of ‘where’ will become of critical importance to Web 3.0 applications where positioning in 4 dimensions [lat, lon, azimuth, time] will be a key attribute.
Podcast
An audio broadcast provided over a network. Generally stored in a MP3, OGG or WMA data container.
SDR
Software Defined Radio. A recent development (circa 1999) in radio design where the IF and RF sections of the transceiver have been replaced by software components as code. The remaining hardware components consisting of the power amplifier and associated circuits
States
Any of the States of the US or Mexico or Provinces of Canada.
Suit(s)
Refers to business administrators whose sole existence is outside of the source of innovation, design and production. syn. Drone.
UGC
User Generated Content. Any content provided by someone who is not paid for such services. Also refers to the purveyor of said content, e.g. YouTube.
Uverse
A internet service triple play provided by AT&T. The service includes Video, VoIP and Email. The service can be provided over fiber or copper plant.
UWB
Ultra Wide Band. Any of a series of services that use frequencies in the 1Ghz range or higher. A WiFi like service but increased bandwidth.
VoIP
Voice over IP. A voice grade service provided using Internet Packet protocols.
WiBro
Short for Wireless Broadband. This is a Korean variant of WiMax.
WiFi
See 802.xx. Specifically refers to the 802.11 band of frequencies.
WiMax
See 802.xx. Specifically refers to the 802.16 band of frequencies.
Wireless
Refers to any data transport that does not depend on wiring as it’s physical medium.
