Back pain is never a pleasant experience; at its worst it can be really debilitating. If you suffer from this type of pain you want to try and relive it as quickly and effectively as possible. Of course, there are medications you can take to relieve back pain but you may want to try something different; or you may want to supplement any medications you are taking with natural therapies. Sometimes a combination of treatments is the best option.
We are going to take a look at massage, QiGong and Yoga, all of which can be helpful in the relief of back pain for some people. If you do not have personal experience of these therapies, and you suffer from back pain, you may be interested to see what the benefits could be.
How yoga can help with back pain
If you suffer from very severe back pain then it may not be a very good idea to use yoga to try and help but if you suffer from either occasional or chronic aches and pains in your back, it’s well worth considering giving yoga a try. The potential benefits are two-fold. The positions used in yoga can help strengthen both back and abdominal muscles. This helps you to maintain a good posture and can help to greatly reduce back pain. Back pain can come from a variety of causes so don’t count out yoga just because it puts you in positions you’ve never been before.
What is QiGong and why can it be good for back pain?
QiGong originated in ancient China and it’s aimed at concentrating on posture and breathing. The name actually comes from two words, Qi which is the life force that runs through the body, and Gong which means skill that is acquired through practice. The name in its entirety signifies the cultivation of energy. The movements you undertake as part of QiGong are simple and slow and they engage the muscles of the lower back. This is why QiGong exercises can help with the relief of back pain.
Massage relief for back pain
If you have back pain that is caused by tension and strain in your muscles you will probably benefit from massage therapy. The one thing you have to make certain of is that the right muscles are targeted. One of the most common causes of pain in the lower back is the Quadratus lumborum (QL) muscle. If you receive a massage during which this muscle is stretched and massaged at the same time, the effect can be to greatly reduce the back pain. If your GL muscle is not working as it should this can cause your Gluteus medius to over compensate and become inflamed. For this reason it’s a good idea to also have this muscle massaged.
Swimming For Back Pain
Swimming is great for those who want to stay in shape but cannot do high impact cardio workouts due to back pain. The pool is often used for those trying to rehabilitate an injury as the weightlessness lends itself to slowly getting back into shape. If running or biking hurts your back a great way to increase flexibility and get a great workout in is to swim. Water aerobics are also great for those who want to stay in shape but cannot participate in many cardiovascular exercises.
As you can see, there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a natural therapy to help with your back pain. Before you make any decisions it’s important to note that it’s a good idea to consult with your medical practitioner for an opinion on what they consider might be the most beneficial choice for you.
